Supporting spiritual caregivers who serve beyond the walls of the church

Chaplaincy & Specialized Ministries at ABHMS extends the pastoral call into areas where people face deep questions about meaning, suffering, hope, and faith. Hospitals, military bases, correctional facilities, universities, and community institutions all rely on trained spiritual caregivers who can guide individuals through life’s most significant moments.

ABHMS partners with American Baptists called to these ministries by offering ecclesiastical endorsement, guidance, and ongoing support for chaplains and spiritual caregivers working in a wide range of professional settings.

Through this work, we affirm that ministry does not end at the church door. Instead, it reaches into the public square and into institutions where pastoral presence is urgently needed.

Where chaplains serve

American Baptist chaplains work in various specialized ministry environments, including:

  • Healthcare and hospital systems

  • Veterans Affairs facilities

  • Military chaplaincy

  • Correctional institutions

  • Colleges and universities

  • Hospice and palliative care

  • Community and workplace chaplaincy

  • Emergency response and crisis care

In each setting, chaplains provide spiritual guidance, compassionate presence, ethical counsel, and pastoral care for individuals of all faiths and backgrounds.

Ecclesiastical Endorsement

Many chaplaincy positions require ecclesiastical endorsement from a recognized faith body.

As the endorsing agency for American Baptist Churches USA, ABHMS:

  • Affirms the ministerial standing of qualified candidates

  • Confirms their preparation and readiness for specialized ministry

  • Maintains professional accountability and denominational connection

  • Advocates for chaplains serving in institutional settings

Endorsement helps ensure that chaplains are recognized both by their faith community and the institutions they serve.

A ministry of presence, a community of support

ABHMS remains a companion in this work, partnering with endorsed chaplains throughout their ministries and offering connection, encouragement and advocacy in demanding and sacred spaces.

Support may include:

  • Guidance through the endorsement process

  • Connection to American Baptist chaplain networks

  • Ongoing encouragement and professional support

  • Representation in institutional and denominational settings

Through these partnerships, ABHMS strengthens the ministry of chaplains who accompany people through some of life’s most difficult and meaningful moments.

Ministry in specialized settings can be both deeply meaningful and uniquely demanding. You are called to serve in moments of crisis, transition, and transformation—often beyond the walls of the church. You do not have to do this work alone.
