Standing with communities in their hour of need

When natural disasters strike, the devastation can happen in an instant; however, the process of healing and rebuilding may take months if not years.

Through Disaster Response Ministries, ABHMS partners with American Baptists and others across the United States and Puerto Rico to deliver practical aid, compassion, and lasting support, addressing not only the immediate needs of those affected but also helping individuals and communities to navigate the long road to healing and recovery that lies ahead.

Meeting immediate needs

In the immediate aftermath of hurricanes, wildfires, floods, and other catastrophes, ABHMS assists individuals and families through the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering in cooperation with American Baptist Churches USA. This offering funds:

  • Food and emergency supplies

  • Temporary shelter and housing

  • Clothing and personal essentials

  • Basic medical needs

These resources help stabilize communities in the critical first days and weeks following a disaster.

Supporting long-term recovery

OGHS funds go beyond addressing immediate needs after a disaster. They are also applied to support ongoing, long-term recovery work that may span months if not years.

In collaboration with other people of faith, ABHMS works closely with the Emergency Response Program of Church World Service (CWS) to develop a comprehensive ministry of healing and recovery. Through these partnerships, congregations and regional allies help families rebuild homes, restore stability, and renew hope for the future.

Mobilizing Volunteers for the Work of Rebuilding

Disaster recovery is a ministry of presence as much as it is a ministry of resources.

Through Volunteer Mobilization Ministries, ABHMS coordinates one- to two-week work teams that travel to affected communities once local regions are prepared to receive volunteers. These teams help rebuild homes, clear debris, and support long-term recovery efforts.

Volunteer Mobilization also serves as a hub for connecting churches and mission groups with disaster-response opportunities across the country, ensuring support persists well beyond the initial emergency.
