ABHMS urges American Baptists to advocate for gun violence prevention
VALLEY FORGE, PA (ABNS 6/17/16)—Following the recent mass shooting in Orlando, Fla., American Baptist Home Mission Societies (ABHMS) stands with Faiths United to Prevent Gun Violence (FUPGV) and the Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America (BPFNA) in urging American Baptists to advocate for gun violence prevention.
Individuals are encouraged to phone the U.S. Capitol Hotline at 202-224-3121 and ask to speak to their U.S. representative and senators regarding the following legislation:
- S. 551/H.R. 1076, which would prevent individuals on the Terrorist Watch List from purchasing and owning firearms;
- S. 2934/H.R. 3411, which would require that background checks be conducted on all private sales of firearms; and
- H.R. 4269, which would renew the federal Assault Weapons Ban in effect 1994-2004.
To determine your representative and senators, use the search function on the GovTrack website at www.govtrack.us.
Resources related to the Orlando incident and gun violence prevention are available on FUPGV’s website at http://faithsunited.org and BPFNA’s website at www.bpfna.org.
