ABHMS awards grants in 2019’s second quarter
VALLEY FORGE, PA (ABNS 9/6/19)—During 2019’s second quarter, American Baptist Home Mission Societies (ABHMS) awarded $257,220 in grants to 27 organizations, churches and regions.
More specifically, grants were awarded to the projects of historic and new partners that pursue ministries that align with ABHMS’ mission areas of Cultivating Leaders, Equipping Disciples, and Healing and Transforming Communities:
- $11,000 total in Asian Ministries grants for leadership development and discipleship to the Innovative Space for Asian American Christianity, Los Angeles; Japanese Evangelical Missionary Society, Los Angeles; Alliance of Asian American Baptist Churches; and American Baptist Churches of Los Angeles, Southwest and Hawaii;
- $8,000 in Discipleship grants from the Louise Burchard Pierce Memorial Fund to Vick and Pathfinder Camp and Conference Ministries, Manlius, N.Y.;
- $1,500 Leadership Empowerment grant to the American Baptist Churches USA Theologians’ Conference;
$115,000 total in Healing and Transforming Community grants, comprised of the following:

- Community Outreach Ministries grants to Edna Martin Christian Center, Indianapolis; Friendship House, Billings, Mont.; Bethel Neighborhood Center, Kansas City, Kan.; Detroit Friendship House, Hamtramck, Mich.; Corporación Milagros del Amor, Caguas, Puerto Rico; Global Health Connections International, Raleigh, N.C.; Heart Reach Neighborhood Ministries, Campbell, Ohio; JOYA Scholars, Fullerton, Calif.; Mount Olive Development Corp., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Rankin (Pa.) Christian Center; Weirton (W.Va.) Christian Center;
- Children in Poverty grant to First Baptist Church, Moorestown, N.J.;
- Volunteer Ministries grant to St. Paul Community and Economic Development Corp., St. Albans, W.Va.;
- $121,720 total from One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) funds, comprised of the following:
- Puerto Rico Community grant to Iglesia Bautista Corral Viejo;
- $16,000 in Refugee and Immigration grants to Monte Vista Cross Cultural Church, Phoenix, Ariz.; Milwaukee Christian Center; American Baptist Churches of Nebraska; and
- $104,720 in OGHS Development grants, approved by the World Relief Committee, to St. Paul Community and Economic Development Corp.; United Interfaith Action of Southeastern Massachusetts; Anadarko (Okla.) Indian Education; American Baptist Assembly, Green Lake (Wis.) Conference Center; Bethel Neighborhood Center; and Eagle’s Wings Ministry Eloheh Farm and Seed, Newberg, Ore.
ABHMS continues to realize the vision of its grant-redevelopment process, as announced in 2017, to better align with its mission priorities as well as with realities across the United States and Puerto Rico.
