The Penny Project
The Penny Project seeks to raise awareness of child poverty throughout the United States and Puerto Rico along with support for programs and ministries that respond to their needs. Inspired by the example of the youth of First Baptist Church, New London, N.H.—who raised 60,000 pennies to represent the number of children living in poverty in their state—American Baptist Home Mission Societies (ABHMS) encourages the youth of American Baptist Churches USA to raise 14 million pennies to represent the number of children living in poverty in the United States and Puerto Rico.
Even though we are inching closer and closer to our goal, new penny project groups are welcome to join this effort.
To register a new group or report new collection totals of a participating group, email the Rev. Lisa Harris-Lee. Also contact the Rev. Harris-Lee with stories about how the change you have collected has been used to change the lives of children. Please let us hear from you.
